The Volhard AM/PM diet is a 2 part foundation mix designed to separate the digestion of carbohydrates and protein over the course of a day’s feeding. The Volhard AM/PM diet was formulated to help heal dogs suffering with GI issues, recovering from illness or injury or senior dogs needing an easier digestive choice.
The breakfast meal - AM Porridge - contains cereal grains, egg, vitamins, molasses and a few other ingredients to which the pet parent adds a vegetable and a small amount of yogurt/kefir to balance the meal. Vegetables and grains are used for energy, proper digestion, stool formation and correct functioning of the thyroid gland.
The dinner meal - PM Crumble - consists of freeze dried liver, vitamins, minerals, oils, herbs and fruit to which the pet parent adds the primary ingredient of protein (raw or cooked muscle meat).
Together these two foundation mixes along with the necessary additions provide a complete and balanced fresh healthy meal. Raw feeding has never been simpler!
AM/PM was formulated under the guidance of a Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionist to outperform the nutritional levels for all breeds, sizes and activity levels for adult dogs. This diet can be used to feed puppies including large breed puppies - please follow our puppy feeding guidelines.

Build a Bowl
Every dog is special. But it’s not just their personality. Every dog has unique nutrition needs based on their breed, size, shape, activity level and many other factors. The best way to help your dog be the best version of themselves is to build a healthy, balanced bowl that’s a combination of grains, vegetables, proteins, hydrators and supplements that are specific to your pet.
When you build a bowl here at Volhard, you will start with the choice of foundation mix. For better planning, it’s helpful to think about the dog you plan to feed and their issues first. This is where you can determine the "personality" of your bowl.
Build-a-Bowl is a fun way to find out what the nutritional value is in a bowl of Volhard! Then you will be asked to add a protein for a delectable super-powered meal for your dog!

The Transition
Add a small amount of AM (veggies and yogurt) and/or PM (protein) to the current diet you are feeding your dog now and mix with water. As the week progresses, gradually increase the amount of the diet at each mealtime, veggies, yogurt, protein, and water as appropriate while at the same decreasing the current diet by a corresponding amount, until you have phased out the current diet. (If you are feeding the same protein for six days, you may want to feed another protein - canned mackerel or cottage cheese - on the seventh day.) At the end of the transition period, weigh your dog. Weigh your dog again after four weeks. Increase or decrease the amount you feed accordingly.
Recommended Protein: 80/20 beef.
